DEMONSTATION AT THE BUCKINGHAM PALACE

Evaluation and results of the hoof assessment made at the Royal Mews London through shoeing the Irish gelding "Flgstaff" in the shoeing peroid from 28th July to 25th August during a demonstration of the Unicorn Integrated Horseshoe.

Side view of the right front hoof after 4 weeks of using the Unicorn Integrated Horseshoe.

Sole view after four weeks of use of the Unicorn Integrated Horseshoe.

Besides the hard metal screws, four imbedded tungsten plates are visible. The tungsten plate on the right side of the toe shows a splintered part.

Besides this one sees a crack in the synthetic horn in the toe area wich is characteristic for this product.

This picture shows the sole surface of the hoof immediately after taking off the Unicorn Integrated Horseshoe.

The white areas in the natural sole horn are parts that, after four weeks, still had an integral bond with the synthetic horn.

In the heel areas parts of the synthetic horn are still visible on the hoof walls and in the collateral groove of the frog.

Shows the sole`s surface of the after trimming and a clear reduction of infected areas.

The black spots around the former hoof nails are still visible in the sole horn. These are bruises due to nailing which only become visible in white horn.

Sole view of the right hind hoof immediately after taking off the Unicorn Integrated Horseshoe.

Only two areas in the sole horn had an integral bond with the synthetic horn.

Sole view of the right hind foot after trimming.

Inner side view of the right hind foot after four weeks
of use.

Scrape marks from the adjacent foot are evident in the synthetic horn as well as the loss of the imbedded P.U. block.

The picture shows the outright abrasion of the synthetic horn, the supporting frame with its tungsten plates, the hardened steel screws, the chain links and the P.C. plastic segments in the toe area.

Assessment process

Purpose

The assessment evaluated the condition of the frog, the white line and the consistency of the horn on coronet wall and sole areas, as well as the growth of the foot

Method

The measurements were taken before and after trimming of the hoofs at the beginning and at the end of the shoeing period with the Unicorn horseshoe.

Measurements were taken from:
  • the toe angle (D)
  • the hoof width and length (B;A)
  • the heel`s height (C)
By veterinarian observation.

Summary of the results

  • The measurements clearly show all 4 hoofs grew well within these four weeks.

  • The heels were not ground down but grew as well as the other horn.

  • Decaying spots in the white line of both front feet were clearly diminished after removing the shoe and the trimming.

  • The brittle and dry consistency of the wall and sole horn, whish was found before, could no longer be seen after the trimming.

  • The horn had become more supple.
